Paragraph 1
This image is foggy and distorted and contains what appears to be an engrossed congregation of people setting up a firework also when photographing a moving subject it is common to leave some space in front of it to give it space to move, the colour of this image is maroon but the tone is slightly bland, the atmosphere has a vintage look to it, the tone of the image seems indifferent because it has both rough and steady remenant to it. This image is in the genre of street photography, but has a few traits of its own that wouldn't normally be there in street photography, such as being blurry, having colour but only a limited range of colour and not having a specific subject to focus on. The fact that this image is different in these ways is really what upsets our expectations.
Paragraph 2
I think the way that Ming Smith created this photo is that she took a photo of a crowd behind glass while shaking the camera to give the photo a distorted look I assume this because I can see a reflection with no source in front of the camera which must mean that the source is from behind the camera and she is standing behind a glass which is why we can see it also the firework/light reflection on the glass leads me to believe that there is a firework going off behind the glass or some sort of light is giving of a reflection. The three techniques that she used are; Lack of focus which can affect the image overall by blurring as focus is needed to obtain a crisp clear image, poor light setting which can also affect the image because without a good light setting it is quite challenging for the camera to capture a clear image and blurring due to slow capture speed which can also affect the image because when the sutter speed is slow the obscurity from it can sometime also be captured in the image.
Paragraph 3
- The picture made me do analytical thinking, trying to evaluate what Ming Smith was trying to communicate through this photo, in my opinion the lack of focus and dark theme gives of an unnerving vibe also I would add that the distortion of this image confused me even more as I tried to figure out what was going on.
- The 3 questions I have for Ming Smith about this image are;
1. Why did you chose this kind of dark distorted theme?
2. How hard was it to create this photo?
3. What did you want to communicate through this image?
Paragraph 4
My research on Ming Smith has revealed that she grew up in Columbus, Ohio and moved to New York in the 1970s She was also the first African American woman photographer to have her work acquired by the Museum of Modern Arts. Further research has helped me to understand that she has always had an interest for street photography and that this photo was taken in New York on the 4th of July 1981, for Americans it is a common celebration to light up fireworks on the 4th of July to celebrate the "Morale Booster" that was given to soldiers to encourage them in the middle of the revolutionary war.
- This picture relates to the theme of 'Creative use Of Light' as the source of light in the photo is a lit up firework which is about to explode and I can imagine that the actual image without the fireworks in it would be tasteless and dull, in my opinion the fireworks is what made this image more intriguing.
